SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer won a second and final term leading the nation's eighth-largest city, taking a majority of votes in Tuesday's primary election to avoid a November runoff. In the state's other major mayor's race in Sacramento, former state Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg won handily in the race to replace former NBA star Kevin Johnson as mayor of Sacramento. Steinberg also earned a majority and avoided a runoff. Back in San Diego, Lori Saldana, a former Democratic state assemblywoman who is now independent, finished second. Close behind in third was Ed Harris, a Democratic leader of the lifeguards union who has challenged the mayor on issues including police recruitment and response times.
