Doctor gets prison term for taking $100K in bribes, Bieber tickets from N.J. blood labA New York doctor was sentenced on Wednesday to three years in prison for taking $100,000 in bribes, plus tickets to concerts and sporting events, in exchange for referring patient blood tests to a New Jersey lab. “You forgot the oath you took when you became a doctor,” U.S. District Judge Stanley R. Chesler told Bret Ostrager, 51, of Woodbury, N.Y. before imposing a 37-month prison term and $30,000 fine. “It wasn’t an oath to make as much money as you can.” Calling it an “anomaly,” Chesler said Ostrager had a successful family practice and a $900,000 home in Nassau County, Long Island, made a quarter of a million dollars in some years and was “reaping all the rewards of being a highly successful professional” aspiring to realize the American Dream.
