Convicted Oregon child molester had toes amputated due to prison shoes being too small, $3M lawsuit saysA convicted child molester who had three toes amputated because his prison shoes were too small is seeking $3 million under a lawsuit filed in Oregon. Kelly Preuitt, 55, a diabetic serving more than 10 years, had to wear size-9 inmate footwear known as shower shoes at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility rather than the specialized size-15 shoes he had at Deschutes County jail, according to court documents obtained Wednesday by The Oregonian. The suit, filed May 26 against the Oregon Department of Corrections, accuses jail and medical staff of negligence and medical malpractice in May 2014. “The issued footwear did not fit Plaintiff and was extremely tight and constricting,” the lawsuit said. “Plaintiff complained and explained that his toes would swell, blister, and split and that he could lose his toes if he was forced to continue wearing the issued shower shoes. Plaintiff asked to keep his specialized footwear, but his request was denied.” Jail and medical staff turned him down several times when he asked to get his former shoes back or even to allow him to wear only socks instead, according to the lawsuit. After two week's worth of swelling and bloody blisters, doctors at Coffee Creek sent Preuitt to the emergency room, the lawsuit said.
