More than 70 donors to Stoney's campaign got state posts under McAuliffe administrationMore than 70 people appointed to state boards and commissions under Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s administration have donated to former McAuliffe aide Levar Stoney’s campaign for Richmond mayor, records show. Stoney received $96,440, nearly a third of his record-breaking $303,641 fundraising haul, from people who received appointments or reappointments to state boards and commissions since early 2014. Stoney had a hand in those appointments as McAuliffe’s secretary of the commonwealth, a Cabinet position responsible for filling boards and commissions at the governor’s direction. Virginia governors have long treated appointments as a form of patronage, rewarding political supporters with prestigious posts on university boards, business councils and advisory panels. As a McAuliffe confidant with extensive political connections in his own right, Stoney was expected to draw from a similar pool of supporters. The extent of the overlap, 74 donors in all, underscores how Stoney’s ties to the governor and donors throughout the state could fuel his foray into city politics.
