COLUMBIA — A chief opponent of Gov. Nikki Haley’s push to oust three long-serving state senators is one of her top Republican allies who happens to have the office across from hers in the Statehouse. Lt. Gov. Henry McMaster continues to diverge — at least in elections — from Haley, whom he had backed since she first ran for governor in 2010. “It’s odd since this lieutenant governor and governor have acted as a team for so many years,” Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey, R-Edgefield, said. “It surprises me how they have taken different directions.” The split among the top South Carolina GOP leaders started with the 2016 presidential campaign when McMaster supported eventual and presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump, while Haley endorsed Florida Sen.
