The faculty union at the University of Florida wants the university to do more for faculty members starting families. With collective bargaining negotiations underway, the UF chapter of the United Faculty of Florida is pushing for the administration to begin giving new fathers and mothers paid parental leave for up to a semester. The union has also launched an online petition to push for paid leave and picked up 160 signatures of support so far, president Susan Hegeman said. The faculty union campaign at UF comes after a group of large technology corporations, including Netflix and Amazon, have started or expanded paid parental leave policies, drawing attention to the issue in a country that does not mandate paid family leave.
