BURLINGTON — After a “careful investigation into the First Amendment and other legal considerations,” Mayor Miro Weinberger said the city will not take Donald Trump to court to try to hold him liable for costs incurred during his January rally at the Flynn Center. “That said, Mr. Trump’s failure to cooperate with local law enforcement officials and lack of communication with the public and ticketholders put undue strain on the city’s police and unnecessarily hurt downtown businesses. Paying the invoice remains the right and honorable thing for Mr. Trump to do,” Weinberger said in a statement. The city sent Trump, now the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, two separate invoices — one for the overtime worked by police officers and one for firefighters — totaling $8,464.27. Not paying Burlington for the costs incurred during political rallies is a bipartisan tradition. In 2012 the city sent Barack Obama’s presidential campaign a bill for costs the city incurred during his visit, but it was never paid, according to city officials.
