PROVIDENCE, R.I. — On the morning when General Electric announced its GE Digital division is expanding into two new cities — Providence and Atlanta — Governor Raimondo called the decision a recognition of the state's economic momentum. GE Digital will initially hire 100 high-tech, high-wage employees in a Providence information technology center. Hundreds more jobs will be added over several years. The engineers and scientists will develop software applications and drive "innovation in high-performance computing," Raimondo said Thursday. The company is negotiating for a temporary space in the city and will open a permanent location in early 2017, company spokeswoman Amy Sarosiek said. To complete the deal, GE Digital will apply to the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation for about $5.65 million in economic incentives, Commerce Secretary Stefan Pryor said.
