Raimondo administration wasn't consulted about charter school changes, she saysPROVIDENCE, R.I. — Governor Raimondo said her administration wasn't consulted on the rewrite of the charter school funding formula that emerged out of the House Finance Committee early Wednesday, a formula that some charters are calling disastrous. Her proposal called for trimming $355 per pupil from charter schools, which would be returned to the regular school districts. "Our intention was to level the playing field," Raimondo said Thursday. "It was designed to provide certainty and predictability so districts could prepare their budgets." The House Finance proposal does neither, critics say. This revision, which blindsided everyone, would allow districts to cut charter school payments by 7 percent or deduct a long list of district-only expenses, including the cost of teacher pension costs, from charter schools. The mayoral charter schools, which don't pay into the state pension system, say they stand to lose as much as $4 million.
