Unions Endorse Democrats Who Voted For State Budget That Included LayoffsHARTFORD – The state's largest labor organization endorsed candidates for the General Assembly Friday, ultimately backing some Democratic incumbents who supported the state budget that unions spent months railing against. Lori Pelletier, president of the Connecticut AFL-CIO, said unions opted to consider the totality of a candidate's votes in the legislature when making their endorsement. After hours of discussion, the AFL-CIO's political committee opted to include a stern letter with the endorsement of Democrats who voted for the budget, which cut hundreds of millions of dollars in spending and eliminates as many as 2,500 state jobs. "The austerity budget signed by the governor after passage by you and your colleagues is still fresh in the minds of workers all across the state," the letter reads. It tells the candidate that they are being endorsed "despite your extremely disappointing vote in favor of this devastating budget." The budget Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Democratic leaders in the legislature agreed to required reductions in services and job cuts after the governor said he wouldn't support an increase in taxes.
