HARTFORD >> The former co-owner of Enzo’s Restaurant and Lounge on Main Street in Middletown was sentenced to 71 months in federal prison after he reportedly set fire to the restaurant to collect the insurance money.
John Barile, 52, of East Hartford, was sentenced Thursday, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.
A week before a trial was set to begin in February, Barile pled guilty to one count of arson, one count of mail fraud, one count of conducting an illegal gambling business and one count of collecting an extension of credit by extortionate means.
As alleged in the indictment, Barile set fire to Enzo’s Restaurant and Lounge in January 2010 after wiping down the walls with grease and leaving greasy rags in the kitchen. He reportedly let the fire burn with the other co-owner of the restaurant inside with the intention of destroying the restaurant to collect insurance funds, the indictment states.
Barile filed for insurance payments from the loss until November 2012 and was paid a total of $189,787.69, according the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
