In the coming months, The University of Mississippi will have a new plaque installed at the base of a Confederate state on campus referencing the role of slavery in The Civil War and a committee dedicated to advising the school's chancellor on other campus sites, including monuments, buildings, and street names, that should be contextualized. The actions Chancellor Jeffrey S. Vitter said in an open letter Friday are a continuation of a diversity plan implemented by previous Chancellor Daniel Jones to make the campus more inclusive and welcoming. While three buildings — Johnson Commons, Lamar Hall and Vardaman Hall — named after segregationists have already been recommended for contextualization, Vitter is adamant about two changes that won't be made — the school's usage of the nickname "Ole Miss" and athletics teams' name "Rebels." Referring to the terms as "endearing," Vitter said "Ole Miss" evokes a more positive image than does even University of Mississippi."
