A bill to provide financial compensation for those convicted and imprisoned for a crime they didn’t commit cleared an important hurdle Thursday. Senate Bill 291, introduced by state Sen. Steve Bieda, D-Warren, passed by a 37-0 vote in the Senate and now goes to the House of Representatives. Bieda, who said he has been pushing for the for more than 10 years, called it a “huge deal” and hopes for passage by the end of the year. “When an individual is proven innocent, they should get help, not another legal battle,” Bieda said. “Thirty other states already provide assistance to people who are wrongfully convicted.” Read more: www.macombdaily.com/government-and-politics/20160610/bill-to-compensate-wrongfully-convicted-passes-senate
