Lansing schools sued over alleged sexual assault at high schoolLANSING - A new federal civil rights lawsuit brought by a former Eastern High School student against the Lansing School District is the second such lawsuit in as many weeks. At issue is how the district responded to the alleged sexual assault of a then-14-year-old student inside a stairwell at Eastern by a fellow student in October of last year. The State Journal does not name alleged victims of sexual assault. The complaint alleges district staff violated federal guidelines to protect against discrimination of students on the basis of sex and to ensure equal protection of students. The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids. Named in the complaint are Superintendent Yvonne Caamal Canul, Eastern Principal Donna Pohl, Glenn Stevens, assistant principal, Sharon McWilliams, a student services specialist and district public safety officer Willie Rodgers.
