Hillary Clinton coming to Ohio, but where's Donald Trump? The state of the two campaigns
COLUMBUS - Democrat Hillary Clinton is kicking off her general election campaign for the presidency with a stop in Cleveland Monday. She's meeting with donors in Cincinnati the same day. Her staff has been in the quintessential swing state for more than a month.
Donald Trump is also his party's presumptive nominee for the White House. Yet his campaign still lacks an Ohio operation. He has yet to hold a fundraiser with Ohio's wealthy Republicans. And while he plans to spend several days next month in Cleveland for the Republican convention, his schedule for the next week includes no stops in Ohio – a bellwether state every successful Republican nominee has won. His most recent stop in the state came in the lead-up to its March 15 GOP primary, which Trump lost to Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who has so far declined to endorse the real estate magnate.
Democrats say their approach gives more than a nod to the importance of Ohio as a swing state and shows Clinton's superiority in the campaign workings that can make the difference in a close election. But Republicans say they're not far behind, they have a head start on organizing, and Trump has time to set up a campaign. Multimillionaire Edward Crawford, CEO of a Cleveland industrial holdings company, has agreed to back Trump and to raise money for the Republican grassroots effort in Ohio, even though he is a delegate for Kasich at the convention. Ohio GOP Chairman Matt Borges is helping the Trump campaign discuss staff hires in the Buckeye State. And a couple of operatives from Kasich world are working on an effort to help the party reach out to the almost 1 million Ohioans who voted in the GOP primary in March but hadn't done so in 2014.
The Enquirer spoke with Republicans and Democrats throughout the state to parse how the two campaigns compare as the general election comes to Ohio.
