Regents approve UW System budget increasing student fees, spending from reservesThe University of Wisconsin System will increase student fees and continue tapping controversial reserve funds under a $6.2 billion operating budget that UW’s governing Board of Regents approved Thursday afternoon. The 2016-17 operating budget calls for the System to spend $160 million in the coming fiscal year from its reserve funds, which officials say have been draining since they caused a political firestorm when lawmakers discovered them in 2012. Individual UW campuses will also use reserve funds to shore up their budgets. UW-Madison, for example, will spend $15.1 million from its reserve, for a total operating budget of $2.8 billion. Student fees will rise by an average of $59 per student at UW campuses under the budget, including a $72 increase at UW-Madison. The cost of campus housing and meal plans will also increase.
