Bill Clinton, the former U.S. president who hopes to be America's first gentleman, will speak at the Democratic Party of Arkansas' 35th annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner, party officials said Thursday. An appearance at last year's dinner by his spouse, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, attracted 2,500 people and helped the party raise about a half-million dollars. Party officials are hoping for a similar bonanza this year, predicting large crowds will gather to see the husband of the Democratic presidential candidate. "I don't think we could've gotten a better speaker this year," party spokesman H.L. Moody said. "Our phones have been ringing off the hooks since the announcement this morning." The dinner, typically Arkansas Democrats' largest money raiser, will take place July 15 at Verizon Arena in North Little Rock.
