A malpractice suit filed Tuesday in Miller County alleges a Texarkana, Ark., youngster must live as a "bubble boy" because of poorly designed medical equipment and poor medical care. The suit, filed by Magnolia, Ark., lawyer David Butler on behalf of Ronita Miller and her son, blames CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System and Smiths Medical for a piece of an IV that is lodged in the boy's lung. The child's age is not specified in the complaint, and Butler could not be reached for comment Friday. CHRISTUS St. Michael spokeswoman Francine Francis said the hospital cannot comment on a pending lawsuit. The complaint alleges Miller's son received medical treatment for a bronchial related issue June 8, 2013, in the hospital's emergency department that required the use of an intravenous catheter. When a CHRISTUS St. Michael employee attempted to remove the IV, which was manufactured by Smiths Medical, "the catheter tip separated from the hub on the IV, leaving a portion of the IV in his arm."
