WASHINGTON — It took five years and lots of bipartisan wrangling, but Republican Sen. David Vitter can finally claim victory in his battle to pass landmark legislation reforming the country’s chemical safety law. “It wasn’t easy,” Vitter, R-La., said on the Senate floor recently. “This is long overdue.” The Senate approved the bill Tuesday night, sending it to President Obama, who is expected to sign it into law in upcoming weeks. With that victory behind him, Vitter plans to focus on other priorities during his remaining his six months in the Senate. He will leave office in January after losing his bid for governor last year to Democrat John Bel Edwards and deciding not to run for re-election.
