BATON ROUGE — Gov. John Bel Edwards chief of staff told reporters here Friday afternoon closures of universities and hospitals will begin July 1 if lawmakers don't choose to raise more taxes during the ongoing special session that ends June 23. The huddle of top advisers comes as the House seems unwilling to go beyond the $223 million in new taxes it passed this week. Chief of Staff Ben Nevers didn't identify safety net hospital closures, but indicated the Department of Health would revert to its target list outlined in the first special session of the spring that included Alexandria, Bogalusa and Lake Charles. TOPS, the state's popular college scholarship program, would also be cut in half.
