ALICE — Leaders in Jim Wells County want to run a family detention center in San Diego, where a now-shuttered nursing home once stood.
County commissioners Monday voted to authorize Judge Pedro "Pete Treviño Jr. to begin negotiations with the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Serco Inc.
If approved, the Jim Wells County family detention facility would operate in San Diego at 4410 E. Highway 44, the location of the La Hacienda Nursing Home.
Treviño set a public hearing on the issue for Thursday.
La Hacienda Nursing Home was licensed for 114 beds, according to the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services. It was closed January 2014.
