After Orlando, McCaul bill on domestic extremism to move forwardFollowing the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history at a gay nightclub in Orlando, the U.S. House will move forward with a bill by U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul that is aimed at countering domestic extremism, McCaul said Monday. McCaul, an Austin Republican who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee, said House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy informed him that the leadership is green-lighting the previously stalled Countering Violent Extremism Act in response to the Orlando massacre, in which a U.S. citizen, Omar Mateen, killed 50 people and injured 53 more. The bill would establish an Office for Countering Violent Extremism within the Department of Homeland Security and it would create a grant program to fund “counter-messaging campaigns targeting violent extremism” by organizations within the Muslim-American community, according the Congressional Research Service. “It basically places a priority and a focus within the DHS to have an outreach program to these communities,” McCaul told the American-Statesman. “We spend billions of dollars on military strikes and other operations and very little on prevention.” Read more: www.statesman.com/news/news/state-regional-govt-politics/after-orlando-mccaul-bill-on-domestic-extremism-to/nrftK/
