Sunday wasn't the first time Gov. Kate Brown had been alerted to a mass shooting. In October 2015, only a few months into her governorship, she mourned with Oregon after a man killed 10 people, including himself, at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg. Sunday's shooting was across the country, but the gut-punch of tragedy rang familiar. Friends and family were visiting Brown at Mahonia Hall, the governor's official residence, when she got the news: A gunman had shot and killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando.
