OLYMPIA — Western State Hospital CEO Cheryl Strange won’t have to report to jail this week over her refusal to admit a patient, after a judge Tuesday issued a stay. A spokeswoman for the state Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) said the judge issued the stay through June 21. DSHS asked a judge to step inafter a Pierce County court commissioner Friday ordered Strange and another mental-health executive to report to jail Wednesday if a man with dementia is not admitted. Earlier this spring, a court ordered the man to go to Western State, an 800-bed hospital in Lakewood, Pierce County. Because of a shortage of beds, the man hasn’t been admitted and has instead been kept in a general hospital.
