Orlando shootings revolve around issues familiar to Colorado statehouseThe Colorado legislature has been a nexus of the issues at play in the mass shooting in an Orlando night club Sunday: gays, guns and national security. The question is whether large numbers of voters could translate their emotions from gun violence in June to how they vote in November. “It’s a potent combination — gays, guns and terrorism,” said independent political analyst Eric Sondermann. “You certainly have more than enough red meat to keep people riled up on both sides of the divide.” Support for gun rights and the war on terror fires up the Republican base, while support for gay rights is a strong issue for Democrats. Moderates in the middle, however, are a different matter. And in Colorado, unaffiliated voters make up 37 percent of the electorate.
