RIO GRANDE CITY — Justice of the Peace Salvador Zarate Jr., who was convicted on charges of bribery in April, filed a motion for a new trial on Friday. Zarate was found guilty of bribery for accepting $500 after lowering the bonds of a couple, Daisy and Harry Rich, on Christmas Eve 2014. The two defendants were issued a $30,000 bond until Zarate lowered it to $5,000. A woman came to Zarate’s office undercover to deliver the $500 bribe. The video, presented at the trial, showed her leaving the money at Zarate’s desk after a discussion of the Riches’ case. “We’re complaining there was not sufficient evidence for the jury to convict him at all,” said J.M. “Chuy” Alvarez, the attorney representing Zarate.
