TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie on Thursday nominated his former chief counsel, Christopher Porrino, to be the state's next attorney general. If approved by the state Senate, the nomination would give New Jersey a confirmed attorney general for the first time in three years. The state has had a series of acting attorneys general during that period. Porrino returned to private practice 11 months ago after serving several years in the Christie administration. Now, Christie has asked his friend to return to public life. Porrino, 48, born in Teaneck and living in Union County with his wife and their two children, gave up a lucrative law practice to become director of the state's Division of Law under the Attorney General's Office for two years beginning in 2012. Then, Christie tapped him to serve in his senior staff as chief counsel in December 2014.
