Democratic lawmakers said Thursday they plan to vote to override Governor Christie’s veto on a gun-related measure intended to close loopholes in domestic violence cases. Legislative leaders, surrounded by members of advocacy groups, announced the upcoming vote five days after the worst mass shooting in American history, in which 49 people were killed at a nightclub in Orlando, Fla. No date for the vote has been set. Senate President Stephen Sweeney said the intent of the announcement was to give lawmakers time to lobby enough votes to successfully override Christie. Christie vetoed the bill last November, in the thick of competing for the Republican Party nomination for president. He said in his veto message at the time that the bill “substantially restates” existing laws and suggested, among other things, that domestic violence victims should have their own firearms permits quickly reviewed so they can “protect themselves through lawful means.” Sweeney, D-Gloucester, called Christie’s reasoning “the best excuse he could come up with” to reject a gun-related measure, since he was courting conservative voters at the time.
