A state Senate committee has advanced a bill seeking guidance from the Attorney General on whether drivers working for ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft should undergo a finger print-based background check. The Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee voted 10-2 with one abstention Thursday to forward the bill to a vote of the full Senate. The vote came after the committee chairman and bill co-sponsor, Sen. Paul Sarlo, offered a last-minute amendment that throws the fingerprint question to the attorney general. “Uber and Lyft and other TNC [transportation network companies] are already around. They are already way ahead of government,” Sarlo, D-Wood-Ridge said after hearing about an hour of testimony on the bill.
