PHEAA approves up to $125 million for state tuition assistance program, awaits General Assembly's budgetThe Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency approved allocating up to $125 million of its reserves for the state tuition assistance grant program for the 2016-17 fiscal year at its board meeting Thursday, matching its record contribution to the program from last year. The grant program, which provides monetary awards to college students to make tuition more affordable, relies on PHEAA's contribution pulled from the agency's earnings as one of the nation's largest student loan servicers. PHEAA's allocation will be supplemented by funds carved out in the General Assembly's 2016-17 budget. Wolf has recommended $305 million be reserved in the budget for the grant program, totaling up to $430 million for the program, Keith New, communications director for PHEAA, said Thursday.
