Norfolk State stripped of 97 athletic wins, 2011 MEAC football title by NCAANORFOLK -- Norfolk State’s athletic department has been placed on two years’ probation and will have a total of 97 wins – including its 2011 MEAC football championship – vacated across six sports because of athlete certification violations, the NCAA and the school announced Thursday. The Spartans’ football team will lose seven wins from the 2009 season, six from 2010 and nine from 2011, all as a result of what athletic director Marty Miller described as a “timing error” in the complex certification process. Eleven sports were involved in the violations, but four of those did not end up losing any wins as part of the sanctions because they were sports that did not involve team wins and losses. Additionally, NSU will pay a $5,000 self-imposed fine for what was deemed a Level II violation and an “institutional issue,” rather than one committed within the athletic department.
