Unemployment benefits in North Carolina among worst in the nationNearly every worker faces the prospect of unemployment at one time or another. Unemployment insurance payments have always been a key financial backup as they look for other jobs. In North Carolina, however, that backup is not as generous or long lasting as it once was, according to a new report. The Center for American Progress reports that North Carolina ranked 49th in the nation in unemployed workers drawing insurance payments. Only 12.4 percent of the jobless received them in 2015. The liberal think tank’s survey showed that, by comparison, 70 percent of North Dakota’s unemployed drew insurance payments during that same year, making it the top state. Considering that it usually takes people about six months to obtain a job in the 21st century economy the reduction in benefits is draconian.
