COLUMBIA — Embattled South Carolina State University will keep its accreditation, allowing the historically black college in Orangeburg to remain open after years of financial trouble threatened to shutter the doors. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges recommended Thursday the school be removed from probation after state leaders came up with a financial plan securing the university’s future. “We have been reaffirmed,” said interim President W. Franklin Evans at a press conference Thursday evening. “There are no sanctions against the institution. The message today is that things are all right.” Had the review authority not removed S.C. State’s probationary status, the state’s only historically black public university could have lost its accreditation, forcing the school to close. The announcement comes a week after Gov. Nikki Haley signed a law that forgives $12 million worth of state loans for the school and creates a repayment plan for a $6 million loan that was critical to the securing its future.
