COLUMBIA — An effort to have the legislature override a veto by Gov. Nikki Haley on a comprehensive moped safety bill came to an unceremonious end Wednesday, when the Senate adjourned without taking it up for a vote. The Senate’s actions rendered the House’s earlier efforts to override the veto moot. The House had managed to overturn Haley’s decision by a narrow margin of the two-thirds majority needed to override vetoes, with a 69-33 vote. That vote came after an earlier attempt to overturn Haley’s veto failed in a 65-47 vote. But the Senate failed to gain traction on voting for the bill, because Sen. Gerald Malloy, D-Hartsville, kept blocking it. When the chamber was short enough members to not have a quorum, Republicans moved to adjourn, ending the chances of an override.
