Democrats mourn Orlando massacre victims, strategize for November — and beyondIn many ways, it was business as usual at the Diplomat Resort & Spa on Saturday. The atrium was Main Street for Democratic politics, with arguments over Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Politicians jockeyed for attention, hoping for news coverage. A range of constituency groups strategized and vetted candidates. But there was notably less of the unbridled optimism that usually permeates the annual spring gathering of Democrats from across the state. With the Orlando massacre still fresh, there were many emotional moments as some candidates and party leaders choked back tears, lamented bigotry against the LGBT community, and angrily demanded action to limit access to at least some kinds of firearms.
