BRISTOL — Re-establishing passenger rail service between Berlin and Waterbury would cost more than $500 million and attract no more than 800 riders a day, state transportation planners reported Thursday. In the last months of a multi-year, $1.25 million study, the transportation department is saying that passenger service on the tracks that run through New Britain and Bristol isn't financially feasible now or in the short-term future. Just restoring the privately owned 24-mile rail line to good condition for moderate-speed freight trains will cost more than $100 million, the DOT said. "The company would certainly have to bear the bulk of that investment. It's not going to come from the state," DOT Planning Director Mark Carlino told a half-dozen listeners at the public library on Thursday night. I like trains too. However, this is a short commuter line so other than reading the paper or catching up on cell phone messages there isn't much to be gained for a line that is only going to serve about 800 commuters. The train line between Irving and Dallas was completed after I moved from Irving, but I would ride it when I visited the Metroplex and also used it to connect to Rowlett so I covered the entire lines in an east-west direction. I also went as far north as possible on one of the northbound lines, but I never ventured south of downtown Dallas or connected to the TRE that went to Fort Worth. The DART line in Dallas is actually the longest commuter train network in the United States at 85 miles. BTW, when I was in Florida for a business trip in 2002 I did ride the train from West Palm Beach to Boca Raton.
