Bulger’s sterling silver “psycho killer” skull ring. The court-ordered auction of the personal effects of notorious Boston gangster James “Whitey’’ Bulger and his girlfriend, Catherine Greig, is drawing some interest online, although only small amounts of money have been bid so far. The auction arrives in Boston next week, but interested bidders can place bids now at the website, txauction.com, where photos and descriptions of the 103 items are posted. When bidding starts for real, the online preliminary bids will serve as the starting point, officials said. By mid-afternoon Saturday, Bulger’s sterling silver “psycho killer” skull ring had drawn a $4,400 bid. A bid of $1,051 was posted for his rat pencil cup (including scissors and pens), while a “folding military field shovel” and “new small Craftsman Car ‘n Garden Mate shovel’’ had attracted a $35 bid. On June 24, the day before the auction officially opens, the public can view the items at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. Items seized from the Santa Monica, Calif., apartment Bulger and Greig shared as fugitives will be on display, as well as items recovered from a London safe deposit box and from homes in South Boston, Quincy, and Louisiana.
