The chairman of the House General Fund budget committee said today he will run for speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives if acting Speaker Victor Gaston does not. Rep. Steve Clouse, R-Ozark, has served in the Legislature for 22 years and said he believes he has the background and knowledge for the leadership position. Clouse said Gaston would be a good choice, as well. Gaston, as the speaker pro tem, moved into the position of acting speaker when Mike Hubbard was convicted of ethics charges and removed from office last week.
