Barbara Wills doesn’t like the term “cat lady.” It implies a craziness, she said, or a willingness to ignore unpleasant messes and smells. Wills is, say, more of a cat crusader. She has to be as the director for Cats Haven, a free-roam sanctuary for elderly and special-needs cats in Indianapolis. Her hemophiliac and epileptic kitties are the unwanted castoffs of overwhelmed shelter systems and families. A Petfinder survey of its 12,527 shelter and rescue group members found that senior pets and pets with special needs were the first and third hardest type of animals to place. Wills’ cats are more than their illnesses. Charlie Mouse might wobble when he moves, and Xavior may hop around on only three legs, but the two are also cuddly attention hogs, ready to brush up against anyone that walks through Cats Haven’s blue door.
