Children's Hospital of Illinois is on the leading edge of integrating sleep into health carePEORIA — Sixteen-year-old Sydney Sumer said that whether or not she got a good night's sleep during her stay at the Children's Hospital of Illinois "just depends on what medications I'm on and my pain medication." As any parent would probably confirm, especially those parents whose children who have had extended stays in a hospital, sleep is an important part of feeling better, a concept that some of the nation's forward thinking children's hospitals have begun to embrace. Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore made national headlines earlier this month when it went public with its initiative to improve sleep in the hospital's pediatric intensive care unit, but leaders at the Children's Hospital of Illinois say the issue has been on their radar for a decade and has been since they even began talking about and designing the hospital. "The evidence was very strong that a healing environment did reduce length of stay, and you can increase the patient's ability to resist a hospital acquired infection," said Sue Wozniak, interim president of the Children's Hospital of Illinois. Wozniak was chief operating officer when the building was designed and constructed and the lead executive on the project. "When you have the opportunity to build from the ground up, I just think you're not doing your job if you don't follow that in your design concept."
