WAUSAU - People picnicking on The 400 Block might have to leave their wine and beer at home come July. City officials are taking steps to limit alcohol consumption on Wausau's popular square. Members of the Public Health and Safety Committee recommended Tuesday night that all drinking be banned at the downtown park except during special, permitted events. Those events would include festivals, parades and Concerts on the Square, which all require approval by and payment to the city. Drinking now is allowed at the park whenever it's open, but businesses and park users have logged complaints with the city about daytime drinkers on The 400 Block who get drunk, harass passersby and urinate publicly. Mayor Robert Mielke, who took office in April, asked the committee Tuesday to take some action. Mielke has seen people on The 400 Block get progressively intoxicated through a day and become disruptive. He has been working on the issue with Council President Lisa Rasmussen.
