Louisiana House committee kills resolution that upsets LGBT communityA Louisiana House committee overwhelmingly rejected a measure in a 8-1 vote on Tuesday (June 21) that LGBT advocates perceived to be discriminatory. House Resolution 4 would have required a legal advisory group -- the Louisiana State Law Institute -- to hold any meetings about the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to legalize same-sex marriage at the state Capitol, where the meetings could be recorded and archived. The law institute advises the state on a variety of policy matters. In the past legislative session, it was asked to take up nearly a dozen different issues. But the group's work regarding the legalization of same-sex marriage would have been the only subject matter that had to be recorded and archived under the proposed resolution. LGBT advocates objected, saying an issue concerning their community was being treated differently than all other policy matters. They also took offense to the timing of the resolution, filed for consideration only a few days after the mass shooting at an LGBT nightclub in Orlando.
