Right to water? Right to Farm opponent expresses concerns about possible water grab from eastern Oklahoma if constitutional amendment is passed by votersAn opponent of the Right to Farm proposal believes the proposed amendment to the Oklahoma Constitution is actually part of a strategy to move water from eastern Oklahoma to western Oklahoma and Texas. Mickey Thompson is executive director of the advocacy group Oklahomans for Food, Farm and Family. He is urging voters to vote “no” on the proposed Right to Farm amendment, formally known as State Question 777, because he said the proposal, if passed, would clear the way for shipping water out of eastern Oklahoma. “The water issue is the most important issue — it is the most polarizing,” Thompson said. “Oklahoma City and east, that is where the water is and that’s where the votes are. People in eastern Oklahoma are very sensitive about water, and people in the west are sensitive for a different reason — because they are running out.” The Right to Farm proposal will be on the ballot this November. Voters will be asked to approve or deny an amendment to the constitution which would prevent the Legislature from passing laws abridging citizen’s and residents’ “right” to employ agricultural technology and livestock production and ranching practices.
