Oklahoma Arts Council Takes 16 Percent Cut for Fiscal Year 2017OKLAHOMA CITY -- The state’s fiscal year 2017 budget, signed by Governor Mary Fallin includes a reduction to the Oklahoma Arts Council’s appropriation that equates to a 16.3 percent cut from the agency’s original fiscal year 2016 appropriation. At $2,938,293, the Council’s budget will be lower than it has been in any year since fiscal year 1990. Oklahoma Arts Council Executive Director Amber Sharples commented on the newest round of funding reductions to the agency. “Compounding budget cuts are affecting our ability to leverage the arts as robust tools for meeting the needs of our state. We are facing difficult decisions regarding services for schools, alternative education, at-risk youth, military veterans, older adults, individuals with disabilities, nonprofit organizations, rural communities, and more. In considering how we will invest our resources, as a small and independent state agency we are able to adapt in ways that allow us to maximize our impact; however, there are challenges ahead that will unfortunately be felt by the individuals, schools, organizations, and communities that we serve statewide." Since fiscal year 2008, the Oklahoma Arts Council’s budget is down 43 percent. The 2017 fiscal year begins July 1, 2016. www.ardmoreite.com/news/20160621/oklahoma-arts-council-takes-16-percent-cut-for-fiscal-year-2017
