Kansas Supreme Court orders Brownback to explain why he hasn't filled judge vacancyThe Kansas Supreme Court has given Gov. Sam Brownback until July 11 to explain why he hasn’t filled a judicial vacancy in southwest Kansas after accusations the governor is holding the position open because of political maneuvering. An order issued Tuesday and signed by Chief Justice Lawton Nuss sets the deadline for the Republican governor to demonstrate why the court shouldn’t order him to fill the position. The order comes after three district court judges petitioned the court last week. The petition alleged Brownback hadn’t fulfilled a legal obligation to fill the vacant district magistrate judge position. The petition asserted the governor intends to wait until after the August primary election to determine whether to make an appointment.
