Lawmakers set sights on assault weapons bans in Nebraska, IowaLINCOLN — Look for battles over assault weapons in Nebraska and Iowa next year. Some state lawmakers say they will push to ban the types of guns used in recent mass shootings. Lawmakers in both states said they would try to pass bans on assault weapons in the wake of Monday’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court not to review Connecticut’s prohibition on sales of the military-style rifles. Six other states, along with multiple cities and towns, also ban or restrict such weapons. “I’m going to craft legislation to ban their possession and ownership for civilian use,” said Nebraska Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha. “These are military-style weapons, and they should be in the hands of the military only.” Iowa Sen. Matt McCoy of Des Moines said Monday that he felt compelled to introduce a similar bill in response to the recent massacre of 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
