Donzell Canada, friend of Freddie Gray, shot dead day before Goodson verdict
As news of the police acquittal in the death of Freddie Gray spread across the nation Thursday, some of Gray's friends silently mourned a more recent loss — the death of their friend Donzell Canada. One of Gray's close friends, Canada was shot dead the day before the acquittal near Gilmor Homes in West Baltimore.
He was Baltimore's 127th homicide of the year.
Canada, 29, was affectionately known as "Zelly" in the neighborhood. He lived on North Fulton Avenue next door to Gilmor Homes, and was often seen smiling and hanging out with friends on its sidewalks.
He said last year that Gray was his childhood friend and one of more than 10 he'd known to have died in recent years.
