Nurses are on the front lines of hospital care. Yet Delaware law is behind the rest of the country when it comes to protecting them on the job. Currently, only assaults against nurses providing emergency care are classified as Class D felonies. House Bill 214 by Rep. Helene Keeley, D-Wilmington South, would consider assaults committed against any nurse performing his or her duties as second-degree assaults. Assaults against police officers, firefighters, paramedics and other first responders are automatically classified as second-degree in the state of Delaware – punishable by up to eight years in prison.
