Two weeks after Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) finally secured a Republican co-sponsor for his long-sought legislation to update chemical safety legislation, he passed away. After his funeral, his widow, Bonnie Lautenberg, picked up the phone and called another bill supporter. Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.), to ask him to continue the effort with that Republican, Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana. "We can't let this die," Bonnie Lautenberg said shortly after President Barack Obama signed the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act. She was on stage with Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy; Vitter; Udall; Lautenberg's successor, U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.); Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. (D-6th Dist.) and 11 other members of Congress to watch Obama sign the legislation.
