Christie vetoes bill requiring diversity training for N.J. police officersTRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie on Thursday vetoed a bill requiring cultural diversity training for police officers across New Jersey, calling the requirement an unconstitutional, unfunded mandate. The measure (A1663) would require every county, local and campus police department to adopt a training course for dealing with members of every racial, ethnic, and religious group or sexual orientation and gender identity. In his conditional veto message, the governor said he agreed with the bill's intention, writing that "cultural diversity training assists in the promotion of positive interactions between police and the communities they serve." But, the governor added, the law would be unduly costly and could create "more than 500 unique and potentially inconsistent plans."
